Hello Everyone,

Kind of new to this newgroup thing..
Just a question....What does a one-day-rip entail?

Lost pay? A black mark on your record?
Cleaning toilets?

Any response will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Mark

Time off without pay; marks on your record. I'll let
those here who really know comment on how often it happens.

I have the impression it's like detention in high school,
but more expensive -- everyone gets a few; but when there's
a seat there with your name on it...

I would liken it more to a suspension.

A "rip" is NYPD slang for a disciplinary action being taken against a member of
the service. A one day rip would mean that the cop would lose one vacation day
as a penalty for an infraction. That is if they agree to the penalty. If not
they can go to the trial room and take their chance that they would get less or
could get more. Not too many go to the trial room because it is basically a
kangaroo court.
In the NYPD a cop is never found not guilty. It is either guilty or
unsubstantiated which means "you did it but we can't prove it".
Thats the NYPD's system of justice.

It's definitely not a suspension. It usually ends in a loss of vacation days.
A RIP usually results from a CD (command discipline).

RIP = reduction in pay.

Since Andy's a detective first grade, however many days he gets a rip
means he gets "second grade" money for those days (by the 9/28 eppy, a
two-day rip).

Thanks. I had this question as well. Now what I wonder is how weak is
the NYPD union that a boss can just give out RIP's for what appears to
be arbitrary reasons.

This is drama, not the real thing. Please don't confuse the two.

OK. But only since you insist.
