When watching this show seried 1,2,3 and hard to tell whether there's
any seniority between the characters. It looks like Leiu and everyone
else.

Is there a rank between Leui and the Detectives.., for example do they
have Sergents?

Are there ranks/levels of detective, if so..what would the pecking
order be between Martinez, Medavoy, Simone, Sipowicz, Russell, Lesniak
(S2)?

In S3, Bobby went to some ceremony wearing his uniform and white
gloves, can anyone tell me what this was about and why a detective
would ever wear his uniform again?

In the first season there was an episode where Capt. Haverill assigned the
detectives to work a parade in uniform. It was part of his plot to get rid
of Fancy.

In the NYPD the rank of detective is determined by the police commissioner.
Emergency Services and Aviation are one of several units that have unformed
detectives. They do not do typical investigative work but have been recognized
by the PC for exceptional duty.

The NYPD has organizational *rank*, pay grades, pay *rates*, details and
bureaus.

"Detective" is not a rank. Organizationally a detective and a patrolman
(uniformed officers) hold the same rank. One is just a member of the
Detective Bureau. Pay varies based on senority and other things. The show
doesn't give us much insight into how things work for uniformed patrolmen,
but they do for the detectives. Going from patrolman to detective is
considered a "promotion", but not in terms of actual rank. It is more a
matter of pay and prestige. (Although a senior uniformed officer may make
more than some detectives, especially if his assignment offers lots of
opportunities for overtime.)

Yes, the NYPD has sergeants. (Martens of IAB is a sergeant, James Martinez
is promoted to sergeant and leaves the Detective Bureau for a uniformed
assignement with more regular hours.) To get an actual *rank* promotion
(from detective/patrolman to sergeant, or from sergeant to lieutenant) you
have to take a competitive examination. The top scorers from each exam
"class" are offered the "x" number of openings at the next rank. Sergeants,
like lieutenants, are "bosses" in the NYPD heirarchy. They outrank the
detectives regardless of where they're assigned.

Yes, there are three grades of Detective: A new detective is detective 3rd
grade, he can then be promoted for various reasons to detective 2nd and
finally to detective 1st. There appear to be various pay *rates* within
each grade depending on an officer's seniority. A senior detective first
can make as much or more than a Lieutenant, just as a lieutenant with a lot
of time on the Job and a command slot (like Fancy) can make around Captain's
pay.

Detectives are still cops. They wear plainclothes on the job, just as some
military officers wear civilian dress on certain assignments, but they all
have their dress and ordinary uniforms for when they're needed. Dress
uniform is worn for ceremonies including promotions and funerals, ordinary
uniforms for when the department needs extra manpower for an event and
dragoons detectives into the mix. Bobby wore his uniform to his formal
promotion to Detective 1st at One Police Plaza. As noted in another reply
the whole squad wore their uniforms when assigned to crowd and traffic
control for a parade. (By a vindictive Captain Haverill)

On Blue, one often hears the phrase "in the bag" which is slang for
the patrolman's (or Sergeant's or Lieutenant's*) uniform. It has two
connotations:

One, as was mentioned in other posts, is to put on the uniform to work
a detail such as a parade, e.g. "we gotta get back in the bag to work
this parade."

Another refers to one's time as a uniformed patrolman, as opposed to
plainclothes work such as detectives, anti-crime, and undercover.
Medavoy made reference to such in the episode where he and Bobby went
to toss Webster's apartment and while Bobby was inside, Greg talked to
the uniformed officer guarding the place and commisserating with him
about lousy details he had had like that when he "was in the bag."

*or even Captain's. There was an episode in which a black captain's
(played by the actor who played ADA Robinette in early Law & Order
episodes) wife was murdered and when he showed up at the squad he was
in the bag.

Right. He was probably a captain commanding a uniformed detail, or assigned
to One PP (where the actual cops with command rank often where uniforms to
distinguish themselves from the civilian political appointees.) And a fine
actor, too. I'm kicking myself for drawing a blank on his name. <g>

He made another guest appearance on Blue as the father of little girl who
was murdered by her mother and the mother's boyfriend.

And.... have their own union. Guess there's three: "Enlisted men"
Sergeants, lieutenants & above? - but maybe there are more.
