place. It is reasonable to assume that he was molested repeatedly by the
uncle who cared for him and his sisters, and that he never came to terms
with it and feels guilty and ashamed of it. It also seems likely that the
uncle did NOT molest Danny's sisters, and they are baffled as to why he
would have nothing to do with his uncle and aunt.
i see. i remember assuming he was molested and wishing to god they'd come
right out and say it, then move on. since they never did and his confession
in his final episode about his problem didn't mention that he was not
molested. in any event, it was very poorly handled.
I think it came out badly because the actor who played Danny left the show
abruptly.
I think their plan was to introduce Danny Sorensen as a wonder-boy cop --
which he was shown to be coming into the show -- more mature and wise and a
better cop than his elders. He was on the fast track to promotion.
And then he slowly started to unravel. I think for his first full season on
the show the only sign of instability was his thing with the paper clips,
and then he started behaving more and more erratically.
I think that eventually they would have devoted a major story arc to Danny
coming to terms with his past -- but only after he'd hit bottom -- and we
would have seen what that past is.
I wonder if that affair with the stripper was planned all along, but it was
planned that he'd survive it.
In any event, I agree with you that it all came out in an unsatisfying way.
It was, I should note, realistic, but who wants a show that's realistically
unsatisfying in a way that life is unrealistically unsatisfying? (I used to
volunteer in a homeless shelter and one thing I discovered quickly is that
most of the time you 't find out how the clients' stories come out. They're
at the shelter for a while, they disappear, and you never really know if
they're back on the streets, dead, or have pulled their lives together.)
