Ok I'm new to the group and have been watching the reruns on Court TV..Did they
ever come right out and say what happened to Danny's sisters or were you just
left to believe they died in a fire?

Nothing "happened" to Danny's sisters. They are alive and well. We see
one of them when she comes to visit Danny, and hear about it later when
she's dating one of the uniforms. The fire dream is just Danny's mind
expressing his anxieties about having been left to take care of them in a
new country at such a young age.

Regards,

Joe

Guilt over molestation as a youngster ***and*** feelings that he was
an inadequate big brother to his off-the-boat Norwegian sisters as an
older brother.

I still don't know why some skell called him "Commander" in an early
Sorenson episode. Without any college, he could not have attained
that naval rank despite his service, given his agae, also. Why don't
guys like Bill Clark, Jr. pick up on these minor screw-ups, so easily
avoided in scripts?

I don't remember the 'Commander' incident, but couldn't a skell call anybody
anything?? He wouldn't have had access to anyone's resume.

Actually, if you recall.. Danny was Army. Andy had a moment of respect when
he heard that.. of course, it didn't last.

No Commanders in the Army; that's a high-ranking naval officer and Sorensen
had prior rapport with the skell, both of whom were in the navy. Go figure?

That "secret" was about the most annoying thing ever on NYPD blue as was
everything Milch was writing about that time. Frankly, I was glad to see
both of them go (Milch and Rick). Even though it's a shadow of its former
self, I think had Bochco not taken over things would have really gone
downhill. You couldn't even follow what anyone was talking about.

Even the skells used the same lingo "and so forth". It was like a puzzle.
Call me simple, but I think the Mark-Paul era is better than the Rick era.

He called him Commander out of respect. He thought that since Sorenson was
American he must have gone to college and obtained the rank with the NYPD.

yes, they drew out the "secret" for so long that no one would care when it
was
revealed and no event could live up to the hype it received. diane's
rejection also
played into his whole complex as well.

okay, i missed the molestation angle somewhere. i know danny got especially
stirred
up (if that was possible) when working molestation cases (marcello?), but i
don't recall
him ever explicitly stating he was molested. am i remembering wrong?

Nope, they kept it a secret (IIRC), but clues were dropped all over the
place. It is reasonable to assume that he was molested repeatedly by the
uncle who cared for him and his sisters, and that he never came to terms
with it and feels guilty and ashamed of it. It also seems likely that the
uncle did NOT molest Danny's sisters, and they are baffled as to why he
would have nothing to do with his uncle and aunt.

i see. i remember assuming he was molested and wishing to god they'd come
right out and say it, then move on. since they never did and his confession
in his final episode about his problem didn't mention that he was not
molested. in any event, it was very poorly handled.

I think it came out badly because the actor who played Danny left the show
abruptly.

I think their plan was to introduce Danny Sorensen as a wonder-boy cop --
which he was shown to be coming into the show -- more mature and wise and a
better cop than his elders. He was on the fast track to promotion.

And then he slowly started to unravel. I think for his first full season on
the show the only sign of instability was his thing with the paper clips,
and then he started behaving more and more erratically.

I think that eventually they would have devoted a major story arc to Danny
coming to terms with his past -- but only after he'd hit bottom -- and we
would have seen what that past is.

I wonder if that affair with the stripper was planned all along, but it was
planned that he'd survive it.

In any event, I agree with you that it all came out in an unsatisfying way.
It was, I should note, realistic, but who wants a show that's realistically
unsatisfying in a way that life is unrealistically unsatisfying? (I used to
volunteer in a homeless shelter and one thing I discovered quickly is that
most of the time you 't find out how the clients' stories come out. They're
at the shelter for a while, they disappear, and you never really know if
they're back on the streets, dead, or have pulled their lives together.)

abrupt?? they dragged out the problem too long as it is.

i see your point that if he was there longer it would have had the proper
resolution
that such a long buildup required. i just think that danny and his problem
was so
annoying by the time he left, that no explanation could have redeemed it.
Post by Mitch Wagner
It was, I should note, realistic,
yes, and i applaud realism. but such realism is out of character for blue
in
which
most personal problem that require years to come out and fully resolve are
dealt with
in the space of a one or two episodes. that's the direction blue has chosen
to go and
i think they need to stick with it, for better or worse.

the same reasoning applies to t-rod and rita's relationship. the pace it's
developing
is realisitc, but i'm so used to blue's characters meeting at the beginning
of
the
episode, hopping in the sack at the end, and pledging their eternal love and
devotion
during the next episode, that they seem to crawling at a snail's pace.
